IRIE SOUL: Setting intentions and living by them

The practice of living by and setting intentions is something I encourage to everyone I meet. 

But what is an intention?

When we speak about intentions, we mean to consciously live life with active intent to move in a particular direction.  It's very much like setting a New Years resolution on January 1st but on a more continuous basis throughout the year. In order to set an intention, it involves reflection on what we want, determining where we want to be and discovering what fuels our fire. By uncovering our internal passions, we're given a sense of purpose. By writing down our intent and purpose, it helps us to strive forward to achieve it. 

Most people would associate this with goal setting and dream building but that is only one part of it.  The other part is intention-setting; choosing to let go or move on from what no longer serves you.  This can include parting with unhealthy habits, behaviours and thought patterns that keep you stagnant. It might even mean letting go of certain people in your life that may hold you back from growth.  By letting go, we create the space for new channels and personal expansion.

Building intentional habits

If conceptualizing an intention is new to you, it need not be a daunting task.  Begin with smaller and more short term intentions, it's not the be the end all to master it all at once. For example, a short term intention can be something that will bring you a step closer to your larger goals such as setting aside an hour a week to work on them.  Your intention doesn't have to be super specific either, it can simply be to look at things in a more positive light, or to be more present and mindful daily.

If you are struggling to define your dreams and goals, you can set an intention right now:

"I intend to consciously make time to think about what what my intentions are and how I plan to grow."

I like to encourage people to set intentions around the cycle of the moon as these periods are super-charged.  During the full moon and sometimes new moon, emotions are heightened and subconscious situations are often brought to the forefront of our consciousness. As such, it's a perfect time to let go of what no longer serves you and start fresh.
